FD EGR help, failed smog, check engine light comes on...
hello,
well I just got my FD from the shop today and went to get it smog checked....well i failed. The guy said it was 2nd gear that failed, and my check engine light is on. I checked the light on my own and it gave me the code for the EGR. and the guy at the smog station said the EGR is the problem. My engine is supposed to be Japanese and the JDM engines dont have the EGR valve so I am trying to figure out what to do.
Does anyone have a pic of what the EGR is supposed to look like? I have the 04 workshop manual and it shows that the EGR should have a sensor attached to it.....but I cant find anything that looks like what is in the book. I did find a EGR (or what I think is the EGR) but there is no sensor and i think the vacuum line is connected to the wrong nipple. I am not sure what and where the EGR valve is.
If i dont have the EGR valve, then how do I go around this when getting smog checked? thanks everyone!!

next time search, but since im in a good mood ill help.
Likely the issue is you have a CA ECU in your car which IIRC is the only one that bothers checking the extra smog crap. You need to replace it with one from the other 49 states in order to shake the code or just slap a 330 ohm resistor into the plug on the rats nest and you should be home free.
Also unless the long block is from the land of the rising sun, you may have US intake manifolds which include the EGR and a fistful of other emissions related crap. My recommendation is to talk with your shop and see whats up. Also try to find a non-ca ecu so you can pass w/ no CEL.
Best of luck bro. I'm in the same boat, but don't have to pass emissions here in OR. Just pick up some resistors and do some learning and you'll be fine.

EGR system with function sensor is on 1993 CA FDs only, but on all U.S. FDs for 1994 and 1995. If the car is a non-CA 1993, the EGR valve is there but not the sensor, in which case you should never get an EGR fault light unless the EGR solenoid itself fails.
On cars with the function sensor, if the sensor fails you will get a fault code 16. On any FD, if the EGR solenoid fails (open or short-circuited coil) you will get a fault code 28.
If you want to eliminate either the sensor or the entire EGR system, and you don't want a CEL, you need to create the condition that when the EGR valve is not being activated (ECU terminal 4O "high"), the sensor returns a ground to ECU 3J, and when the valve is activated (terminal 4O "low"), the sensor returns an open to the ECU. Since there will be no sensor to send that signal, a polarity-inverting signal is required.
The circuit I installed in 2008 does that, and is shown below. It was small enough to fit next to my ECU. Please note that if your car did NOT have the factory EGR function sensor, this circuit or a similar one is NOT required.

I guess the big question here is which model year the OP has, if its 94/95 I've got a non-ca ecu Im looking to sell, he can PM for the price, but if its a 93 he will probably have to go the route wstrohm prescribed as it seems like he covers what needs to happen.
Regarding where the sensors in the engine bay are, you should check the FAQ in the 3rd gen section to find the wiring harness, or just check google. The solenoid is right in the middle of the rat's nest and will require a fair amount of work to get to and disable, if its still there, and the sensor function is on the emissions harness somewhere, but considering I have never had to deal with it, I can't point the OP in the right direction.
