FD Current SMIC options
Hey guys
I've done some searches and have found some of the answers I was looking for regarding currently available SMIC set up's. Seems the Greddy SMIC is available from Rotary Performance, the Pettit Cool Charge 3, or used versions of M2, PFS, Blitz etc. I'm looking to keep my battery under the hood even if it's a small battery, are there any good options that are available new still? Looks like the CoolCharge 3 would not fit a small battery (51R or Odyssey) correct? I read mixed things about the Greddy SMIC and most of the other guys are not around any more. I realize these cars are older and not as supported any longer but hoping for some good feed back from you guys. Oh I forgot to ask about the CX Racing SMIC, I could find much on that here, anyone with experience with that, looks like it comes with a duct as well.
Thanks guys.

^SRM SMIC isn't a bad IC by itself if you just looking to upgrade a bit on a mildly modded street car. But it's stupidly expensive (@ $800 + shipping). And like some other choices, it is 'just by itself. You get no duct for that price and end up having to fab or modify the stock duct.
There are some other choices, Blitz and Greddy as already mentioned. IIRC they also utilized the stock duct and came with a modification to cover the larger IC opening. If you're will to go USED, there are also ARC/MAZDASPEED SMICs that I see every now and then. They were only slightly larger (if at all) than the stocker, but all aluminum and were as close to drop-in as you could get. There also might be some old-school Pettit Coolcharge II's out there which were a bit smaller than the III's. I think a different intake was needed but the allowed retention of the stock battery. Then there's the PFS mediums 'kit'...which is what I ended up going with. Trying to be as objective as possible...(IMHO)...
Pros: *Much larger core than stock and efficient end-tank design for low pressure drop.
*Battery stays and the PFS intake box replaces the stock intake box.
*Stock intake hoses are also used. Duct is made to fit and very sturdy gel-coated FRP.
*All components fit together well and are easily removed. I pull everything out each spring
to clean the intercooler and re-charge the big K&N filter inside the box. Can do it in less than an hour.
Cons: *The integrated mounting tab is really designed to use/re-use the stock AST and
aftermarket metal ASTs usually don't fit well. At least mine didn't.
*Re-uses the stock accordion intake hoses. None of the hard intake pipe kits fit, so
if you want hard intake pipes they have to be custom bent.
* Like the stock intake, the PFS intake box scavenges air from the intercooler duct which
reduces efficiency. Like the stock intake box, it can/must also be modified ala "cheap
-bastard" to source ambient air from the nose of the car.
*Only available USED. They come up now and then in the 3rd Gen. Parts for Sale section. Look for the complete 'kit' in good shape.
