exhaust question

i traded my friend my s5 tail lights and in return he gave me...
his tails, a tii intercooler in better shape than mine, his exhaust for a n/a rx7 and a few other bits and pieces.

my question... to keep the cost of the car lower, i was gonna use part of his exhaust. (mufflers and where the pipes go to a 'Y') and then get a muffler shop to get me a 3 in. pipe from the downpipe and then have it go down to 2 1/4. is this a bad idea?

thanks

As far as I know the mufflers will still be too small.
