CA Engine/Tranny troubles looming

I recently picked up an 84 rx7. Miles are pretty high at 84k now.
If anyone could help me out with some information so i can fix the engine problem i have it would be great. I'm not much of a mechanic but i want to learn my car.

There seems to be a missfire most notably when i'm idle or when i put the car in nuetral and it revs down, the car definatly sounds it's age xD. So i probably need new plugs and wires but any other tips on tuning this old baby bck up?

Also i have a 5 speed and naturally being young and having my first stick i kinda... well, ya now there is this noise that evryone says is the throwout bearing.
Is it worth the cost of labor to replace that one part? or should i save some more and get the whole assembly? how long can the bearing last when it starts making noise? sorry i'm just a noob and this car is alittle over my head (and budget xD)

advice?

Describe the sound you're hearing, and when it happens. If it's the throwout bearing, you'll hear a whirling type noise whenever you have the clutch pedal pressed in. If you hear it at the opposite time (clutch pedal released), it will be the main bearing in the transmission (expensive!).

If it is in fact the throwout bearing, the labor involved to get at it shouldn't be too bad. But if you're going to pay the labor charge, you might as well buy a new clutch and pressure plate too. Unless you know what is in there is next-to-new.

And if you don't know of any reputable shops in the area, KB Motorsports in San Marcos is a good one. His shop rate isn't cheap, but the job will be done right.

yes it is a whirling noise. There are times when i don't hear it at all but mainly when i have the car in nuetral waiting at a red light or something without the clutch pedal down. Also when i release the clutch after engaging 3rd.
If it is indeed a main bearing does it have much time left if it makes these noises?

Sounds like the main bearing. The pilot bearing is also possible (but less likely), and would be a much cheaper/easier fix. If it is the main bearing however, you'd likely be looking at over a grand to rebuild the transmission. Finding a good used transmission would be a much cheaper route.

As far as how long you can go with a worn out main bearing, I had mine go out on my old NA transmission, and ended up going probably 3-4 months before rebuilding. I'm sure it could have gone longer, of course eventually you'll be looking at a seized bearing. But how long exactly is anyone's guess.
