engine swap?
I have just bought my first RX7....an 88. It is a sweet unit, but the original engine is long gone. I am looking for help finding an alternative engine, 4 cyl or 6? Mazda?for it. All I want is to have a basic driver, fun to drive, as basic as possible. I don't want a turbo or modified unit at all. I am hopeful that someone can make a suggestion for such an engine that will mount up to the stock transmission....5 speed, in the most direct way. I have been an aircooled VW guy for a long long time....and have built lots of cars. I just want to put this one on the road and enjoy the ride. Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated! thanks
there is no short solution for what youre looking to do. any swap is going to be 10k minimum. ECU, harness, swap kit, engine itself+minor maintenance, radiator, miscellaneous and so on, you will be at or around 10k. as far as i know there arent any adapter plates for the fc bellhousing to adapt to anything. to follow through with even an LS swap youre going to be into it quite a bit of time, money and effort. you want to try a JZ or K then youre going into some high dollar territory. get your hands on another 13b. this will be the shortest and easiest route

yeah, i agree with the above. a 13B is going to be your least expensive route because you don't need to adapt (or design) anything, it just bolts in. however, that is not to say it might not be costly though.
that said, i know there is a company out there (KPower Industries, i think) that specializes in K-swapping Miatas. you may want to look into them because it's the closest thing i can think of where you can get a kit that might be relatively easy to adapt. the kit is like $ 6,000 and that does not include the K24 or the Miata tranny. outside of that, i think it's your call because virtually everything else (except American V8s) will have to be engineered by you or whoever is doing the work for you.

i'm curious what your motivation is for not wanting to put another 13B in it.
