Engine store and care
Hey Guys been on here for a while but recently came across a great deal on a new motor and roller. I have had the motor for about two months now and it has been sitting for about a year from what I understand. It is a single turbo conversion and has been ported as well. Since I have a wife and I kid I cant spend the money up front to get the body work done. So 1) what do I need to do to store the engine and also make sure it works. 2) for now just to get the car running can I use a stock turbo ? I know the performance will not be as it should but will it work? I will post pics later on and keep you all updated on the progress but just need to get started with the engine care. Thanks for all the help an if any questions are stupid please bare with me lol
though i've come to find that old saying, "the only stupid question is the one not asked," is not always true, your question is fine. if you don't know, then you don't know. besides, that's what most people are here for.
1. storing the engine is fairly simple. making sure it works is a bit more tricky because you'll only know that when it's running. i've seen motors with 6 "puffs" that didn't run well, so ...
A. lubricate the seals be pouring your lubricant of choice into the intake or exhaust ports (i use gear oil, but you can use other oils/lubricants).
B. rotate the engine a few times by hand to coat the housings and work the lubricant into the seals.
C. keep it in the driest place you can find.
D. plug up any access that will allow air or foreign materials into it. i know that there are actual block-off plates for intakes and exhausts, but you can use old cloth or paper towels.
2. well, obviously the car will run with healthy stock twins, but if you don't already have them, i wouldn't bother trying to source them. i'd just wait until everything was together and run what i had in hand.
hope that helps.

thanks for the help about storing the engine in regards to the turbo if I have a single turbo conversion an use on one the two factory turbo as the only one will it work for the single turbo

what do you mean puffs??
how do you rotate the engine
what do you mean plug up an access ??
i'm sure if you really wanted to do so, then you could. it's just a matter of how far you're willing to go to achieve it. i don't think it would be worth the effort though.
2. just throw a 19mm socket on it and turn it clockwise.
3. i mean access to the engine. the intakes and exhausts need to be covered or otherwise blocked so that moisture, dirt, rats, etc. can't get into the chambers.
Thanks. I will do all that in the next few days. I know that there is a " puff" because I turned it the other day to check to make sure it had compression .
Another couple questions is there any where I can get the bolt and plugs for the interior of the car?
and any Idea where I can get carpet for it ?. the one that I have has sat out with no windshield . I scrub down everything but still need seats and carpet but the plastics are looking really good for the most part

Thanks for the help .. I look in the vendors but was still not about to find the nuts and bolts to replace the panels.
Another question ... I am currently looking for a transmission . I have came a cross a pretty good deal on eBay for a rx8 6 speed . will it fit on my FD . the reason I ask is because they are selling it for both.
if it does fit what are the upsides and down sides to each . 6 speed vs. 5 speed .. which is the better one for performance?

although the strength of the Rx-8 tranny can be debated ad nauseum, the one thing that i did glean from reading is that it wouldn't be considered an upgrade over either the T2 or FD trannies. can it work with the REW? yes, but i don't think it would be worth the effort. just look in the Classified section or post in your local forum for an FD tranny.
as for the nuts and bolts, if you can't source them used, then find the pitch and length of the ones you need (maybe search or start a thread in the Gen III section) just take some time one day and go to a hardware store. i get a lot of stuff like that from True Value, but any decent store should have metric nuts and bolts.

ANY idea where I can get a diagram of that FD. For example if you where to get in a car accident and someone is given a estimated they show what parts are being replace and where they go.
We ran six speeds in our race car (until we upgraded to a comp 5 speed) and it is a good transmission. If we can bolt it to a 12a, should not be an issue but it is a big heavy trans, so it may not fit physically. It is one of the best shifting trans that I have used, and the ratio's are fantastic in most gears, so for a street transmission, I would go for it. Just check the syncros before you install and do not lap them in!
The only issue we had with the 6 speeds was a weak fifth gear synco on the upshift and a grind on the second to third upshift after 10 or so races.
We have a couple of extras. Good luck.

What kind of lub are oil should i have used ???
Ok have another question. would it be better to change the seals while the motor is out of the car are just wait an see if it needs to be done once i have the car up an running? The motor has been sitting for a about 9 months. An what if anything else should i do before installing the motor ? And one dumb question do they make digital gauge clusters for the FD?? The previews for the fast and furious and was wondering how accurate it was.
