Engine Flooding?

Hi all,

I am new to rotaries; actually cars in general (my 86 N/A RX7 is my first car ). Anyway, I have been running into some issues as of late.

First I'll give you a little background on the car. Imagine someone who calls tying (literally) one wire to another splicing; or doing an engine swap does not mean you have to hook up half of its electrical and sensors... this is the person who ratted out this poor car a couple owners back. There was an intentional slit cut in the muffler, the O2 sensor was never hooked up as I just found, and quite a few nightmarish cut wires and non-stock wires running in various places which makes wiring diagrams hard to work with.

I have put 6k miles on this car in the last year (almost). A few weeks ago I was unable to start my car outside restaurant- this was just after finding out my o2 sensor was never connected. The car turned over and tried to start a few times, but would not. I could smell fuel going to the engine so that was not the issue. After thinking over it for a minute I decided it was probably the spark plugs fouling up due to the o2 sensor not being connected. I pulled out my plugs (which were pretty fouled) and cleaned them off just to get home. The next days I put in some new plugs (it drove with much more power after this) and then an oil cooler, new oil lines and patched my exhaust. The car was still starting to idle lower than normal after 10 minutes of driving it. This past week, the car did not start again and seems to not start up if I do not let it sit for a few hours after running it. With that in mind I am starting to think the engine has been flooding while running it (is this even possible?), I think the first step will be getting the o2 ordered and hooked up. But do you guys have any suggestions on what this may be as it has been driving for a year without the o2? I have not yet pulled the new spark plugs and taken a look at those, but they are more than likely not pretty.

It may be well to include also, that this car does not have the same power as it did 4 or 5 months into owning it. There is also a small crack on the thermostat cap on the elbow that leads from the radiator to the engine- I have noticed this shortly after owning the car and will be replacing the part soon. Any suggestions are appreciated; thanks!

welcome.

start with a compression test, just to see where you are.
have the injectors refurbished - they may be leaking
check the coolant sensor and/or it's connection - may be relaying bad info to the ECU
