WA Dont need emissions test so what can I get rid of to simplify?

Since the 83 is old enough, I no longer need to emissions test it. Since i am under the hood anyway right now, what can I get rid of under the hood that will either simplify or give me a performance boost?

Leave the rat's nest alone. Get rid of the hot air riser flap and the plastic air horn on the air cleaner...dyno proven 2 HP right there, if I remember right. K&N filter all fresh and red is also a dyno-proven 5 HP change.

That's it for the easy stuff beyond optimizing the ignition system.

Leave the rat's nest alone. All the lines about "running perfect, removed rat's nest and I know I did it right but now it can't even idle, help!"...dang those threads get old.

The real gains will be with exhaust and a nice carb. But they go together. If you just add a carb, then you won't see any gains until you free up the exhaust flow. Pretty much anything that is not needed under the hood can be removed, weight reduction = hp increase.

Check out this thread from when I stripped and cleaned my engine bay: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...highlight=pics

Yes, and if it ain't there, then it can't cause you problems down the road. My engine bay is cleaned of 95% of everything that doesn't absolutely have to be there to make the car run. As a result, it is highly reliable. I probably pulled well over 100 Lbs out from under the hood. That cast iron exhaust manifold weighs a ton all by itself!

I am told that the Rats nest needs to remain until I convert to manual transmission.
