Darn You, Staked U Joints

84 GSL SE

What other drive lines can I use to replace mine? I have heard pre 84 7's had replaceable u joints for there shafts can anyone confirm this?

I'm curious because my rear u joint is starting to fail (65mph+ wobble)

It was pre 83 RX-7's that had replaceable u-joints. When Mazda started the non-replaceable u-joints in 83 they also made the rear flange on the driveshaft larger.

So will an pre 83 drive shaft work on my GSL SE? or do I need to order the u joints from Rockford and go that route? I really didn't want to deal with the staked u joint that's why I was asking about the drive shafts

No, the early driveshaft has a smaller pinion flange. It is not a bolt in replacement.

Thank you for the info. One more question tho. 84-85 drive shafts are the same no matter the model?

All of the manual driveshafts are the same from 83-85. The 84-85 automatic used a different shaft

I know that a Driveshaft Specialty shop can replace the NON replaceable U joint and put in ones that can be replaced later on.
That is what Guys here have been opting to do.At least on the FC non turbo shafts.I'd be searching a shop in your area.
If not try buying a used on here on forum.

I tired all my local shops and also a few in sacramento with no luck. I think I'm going to buy another shaft for now and attempt to do the u joints after the first of the year. I'll keep everyone posted.

Thanks again for all the replies!
