Coolant temp gauge maxed

hey guys so as the title states when i key on in my car instantly the water temp guage maxes out. i know that somewhere in the wire i have a split or something because with a dvom i get no contenuity through the wire as it doesnt even register. while testing i ran a jumper wire from the back of the cluster where the pin is for the coolant temp guage to the battery neg. nothing changed, however when switching from the neg to the pos terminal with the jumper wire the gauge went back down to zero. my question is is this yellow white wire supposed to be powered? and if so where does it pick up its power source from? thanks in advance.

here is a picture of the wire.

I don't know if you disconnected that wire,so I will just come right out and say it.

It sounds like it is shorted/grounded somehow... maybe take out the sensor and inspect or replace it; as it could be grounded inside. Check your wiring too. Power is provided from the cluster itself if I am not mistaken.
