Cold start issues

I have an 89 Mazda RX-7 convertible. My issue is with the cold start mechanism. Even when the temperature outside is in the 70's, if I don't let my car warm up before shutting it down, it won't start again. I had to move my car a few feet, so I started it, moved it, then shut it off without letting it warm up, now it won't start. This has happened before but it was in the cold weather. I have to take out the plugs and clean them to get it to start again. This time, it didn't work, so I am thinking I need to replace the plugs. My question is: Is there a way to prevent the spray of gas so that it doesn't flood the plugs, which prevents it from starting? I do not press the gas when starting, as this makes it worse.

With the rotary you don't just start them and then shut them off. If you do you will have to start it using the deflood procedure: Have the fuel cut relay pulled out while cranking it, when it starts you will have to feather the throttle to try to keep it running while keeping your hand under the dash to plug the fuel cut relay back in at the right time so that it will keep running. You will get a lot of smoke and rough running and may have to try for a while to get it running and to stay running. You should be able to search deflood if you need further explanation. In some cases you do have to remove the plugs and clean them to get it started.

When I have to move my car I just drive it around the block before shutting it down. 1/8 mile or so should be sufficient.

I will correct here and re-state that this only applies to engines with bad leaking fuel injectors. If your fuel injectors are doing their job properly, you will be able to start her up and shut her down without having to worry about flooding the engine. Solution, have fuel injectors flowed and cleaned.

In cold whether though (below 30F?), the engine may be more susceptible to flooding due to the rich start up map and the fuel not evaporating due to the whether (it will just sit there). If the temperature is this cold, do allow it to warm up a bit, but leaking fuel injectors will only amplify the issue.

No need to take out plugs and clean them: http://rx7.com/techarticles_unfloodFC.html
