AZ Changing Instrument Cluster

Any advice on replacing the instrument cluster. Is it a DYI project?

In order to help you, you'll need to tell us what year and model your car is We can't read minds.

But in general, yes, it's a DIY job if you have any sort of automotive inclination. Most of the plastics in any of these old cars is brittle if not already broken, so be prepared.

I've taken my cluster out 3-4 times...
2nd time the hood shattered into 8-9 pieces...

had to superglue it back together, reinforce with fibreglass, fill, sand, primer, wrapped in flat vinyl...

not fun. Something will most likely break... recommend finding out cost of large pieces so you are prepared when they do. Best of luck to you.

I have a 1988 RX7 convertible. I've ordered a cluster from eBay. My oil pressure gauge is not working and it was cheaper to buy a whole cluster.

did you check the single wire on the driver's side of the engine where the sensor is?
maybe you ordered a cluster for nothing?

I can't recall which years it was an option, but if you have tilt steering column, this will be a cakewalk. If fixed column, you'll need to remove the steering wheel.

I can almost guarantee a non working oil pressure gauge is not the gauge it's self, usually a wire or the oil pressure sender unit it's self.

Oil Pressure Gauge

I've checked the wire (yellow and red) that's attached to the unit. It runs a very short distance and disappears into the wiring harness. Most articles I've read say the gauge can be damaged if the car is driven much with the gauge needle pegged.

Oil Pressure Gauge

Right after the engine starts the needle goes to the max. It takes a second or two to move up.

Does it drop when the car has warmed up to temp? Oil pressure sender could be blocked...have you checked voltage at the wire?
