VA Carburetor Issues

I have an 82 Rx7 1st gen. It has 39,000 miles on it. It has trouble idling and maintaining power. The only way to run it is to set the choke to 3/4 closed. It idles at 3k in park and 2k in drive.

The previous owner must have taken the carb off at one point, never disassembled it. The signs are evident, for his goal was to replace the. He only got at three of the four screws, and looks to have given up. He also crisscrossed all the connecting hoses.

When i first got the car I pulled the carb, and replaced the AP. Then I had a rebuild kit that had been opened and missing parts. I took the base plate and carb mounting gaskets to replace the old ones, and they sent the rest back. When I had the carb pulled I was under the impression that the shutter valve had a vac leak, so i removed it and sealed up its hole but left the valve bracket still in the barrel.

The baseplate gasket was right, the upper baseplate gasket was right, and then the mysterious part. Two additional gaskets with holes for each barrel were on top of that gasket and then the carburetor.

Those two gaskets have no small holes to connect the carburetor holes to the ones corresponding on the baseplate. I cant understand why those holes are blocked like that. The new kit only included the lower gasket and the upper gasket.

Being in a rush I made 2 identical gaskets to match the original, and re installed. I took the time to identify the crisscrossed hoses, but request some one knowledgeable confirm my results.

The car ran like **** like before. I just replaced fuel filter and pump, which appears to not be the culprit.

I just pulled the carb back off and cant understand why those extra 2 gaskets are there blocking those passages. I also removed the shutter valve bracket, and plan on sealing it up.

Now I plan to try and make 2 new gaskets to copy the two that came from the kit with the little vacuum holes. I hope someone can support me on the extra gasket question before long. I hope to drive to work tomorrow.

I removed and sealed up the shutter valve bracket port. I also sealed up the shutter valve vacuum port. Cleaned everything up without disassembly, which included blasting all the ports with carb cleaner. I confirmed their passages were open. I ended up going with just the two baseplate gaskets, and taking the other two out of the system. As i reconnected all hoses I confirmed there were no vacuum leaks. Then I reinstalled everything. I pulled and cleaned all the spark plugs, and cleaned up inside the distributor cap.

I set the mixture screw 3 turns out. I ended up cranking the idle speed screw way in, because I could tell it had been tampered with.

I disconnected choke line, the choke plates now appeared to be operating on there own. Before the choke cable tension would close the plates, but now the more tension seems to not change the angle of the plates. Then they will open straight up and down on their own.

At first it didnt want to idle in drive, but then I drove it for about a mile and it started running very good. It also began to idle very good.

Could someone shed some light on what went on, and what systems were not operating due to the gaskets that were blocking the vac ports.

It still idles at 2.7 kin park, and about 1.4k in drive. Is that ok.
