NM Carb vs. Injection

I have purchased a 89 Rx7 NA Convertible. I was aware of the engine being bad. Oil was pouring out of the rear spark plug hole. The E-shaft spins freely. My dilema is to delve into rebuilding my first rotary or to purchase a reman 13b. I do plan on engine mods. I am a certified mechanic and automotive technical instructor.

NM Dilema

How can you tell if a rotor housing is worn too bad to use? Where might I find specs? Sure you and eye it for gouging but where do you mic it and how?

fsm or haynes/chilton manuals give u the different places on the housing for measuring the thickness. the amount of chrome flaking off is the thing to look for.

there is a big *** hose that is attached from the Oil cooler and ends up at the rear iron, near the Plug holes(rear).
are you sure that is not the oil leak? The crush washers on the lines could not be sealing the line against the engine.

For rebuild info, this should help: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-gen-archive-72/video-13b-rotary-engine-rebuild-946068/

You'll also have the oil filter pedestal and oil pressure sender on the rear iron, which could also be sources of an oil leak. If the engine was run with oil gushing out the side, there's potential for bearing damage or worse.

thanks for the replys. I am quite sure the oil is an internal leak. The engine is out of the chassis and on the work bench. The source was / is the rear rotor housing spark plug holes. We pulled all the plugs and spun the engine by hand and had a nice shot of oil several times.

An oil leak that large would be a severely damaged set of oil control rings or some kind of crack internally.

Once the engine is apart you'll see...

Of course, what are your power goals? Because if they are more than about 200HP, you'll want to build a turbo engine instead of the NA.

And for the record, carburetors belong on yard equipment, not on cars.
