could be a coolant seal or broken apex seal. maybe you be a lil descriptive with the smoke. is it white, black, gray? or does it smell like gas, coolant, or something off the wall?

Different color smokes mean various things, all will most likely require a rebuild to properly fix. Depending on how long the car was allowed to do that and if you have to pass emissions like I do, it might also require a replacement of the cats. I experienced the same issue on my 87 when I first purchased it. Had to have it rebuilt, this was 3 years ago and when I was too chicken to try it myself.
I just realized how I read a lot but never post here, joined back in 05 and this is my 3rd post, lol. Anyway, hope my experience helps you a little. And the dude above me is right, the more details the better. Diagnosing automotive problems requires every detail possible to have a hope at being accurate.

no still smoking, it is kind of grey, smells bitter, car is idling at about 2k, when it gets warm the idle goes down to 800- 1000 and the smoking stops, it seems like it is burning oil to me when it is starting up but, i don't know that's why i am asking. if an apex seal is blwon does it smoke constantly or would it stop like this?

Check your compression on both rotors to make sure you don't have a blown seal. Then drain your oil and replace with non-synthetic, and a new filter. Make darn sure it isnt synthetic, because the engine pumps oil into the intake to lube the wipers. Now go out and buy a $20 OMP rebuild kit, and pull the oil metering pump off, clean it, and rebuild. It's located on the front cover, under the water pump.
After all that, try to start it again and if it still smokes then drain the radiator, and run the engine without water. It is of course very important to note here that without water, your temperature gauge will not work, so do NOT let the engine run more than a brief minute--just long enough to see if the engine still smokes, which hopefully it will. If the smoke goes away, you have water leaking into the combustion chamber, and will need to rebuild.
If it still smokes, check the mixture and spark. This is where you may need to take the car to a shop where they will have the high-end tools to check the O2 sensor, IAT, MAP, MAS, and other sensors that basically tell the computer to put in more/less fuel. I am lucky enough to have a friend with access to those tools, and if you know someone, talk to them. The fuel injection system on the RX-7 is pretty much the same as on most other cars, so if it is a mixture problem then your local shop with diagnostics equipment should be able to fix it. Post back and let us know if you come up with anything new.

Gray/blue smoke usually is oil if its like a dark gray getting close to black its usually the car running rich. If its just smoke when you first start it in the morning it could be condensation. If it goes away once the car is at running temp I wouldn't worry too much but just keep an eye out for anything else out of the ordinary.

I'm having a similiar problem. I have an '86 N/A that smokes on startup and when cold (espically when driven cold). Goes away at normaly operating temp. Unless taken over about 4k. After 4k if I'm on the gas I'm good but I willl get a heavy puff when I shift or heavy smoking (blue/gray) on engine braking. Any ideas?

i have an 85 gs smokes bad
my 85 when i start it and run it it starts smoking like a thick white smoke pores out from under car and it is sucking into an exhaust leak i have so then it comes out of exhaust, im talking a lot of smoke i found out that it is tranny fluid shooting out onto the exhaust from somewhere i dont know it looks like its coming out from between the tranny and engine. i was told if the car sits for a while that mud dobbers will get in there and clog up openings. then when it finally runs out of tranny fluid and burns off whats left on exhaust it does not smoke a bit. whats weird it only does it when car is on and tranny gets pressure built up, cause it does not leek at all when parked on drive way as lon as its off. whats weird though while running with tranny fuid and all the smoking going on i see no leak from bottom dripping on ground.? what the heck could it be.

sounds like a bad rotor oil seal as u run the engine is buning but when u shut it down the oil leaks into the chambers and when u start it in the morning u get the smoke as the engine is burning the oil hence a huge cloud

2. If the smoke is from burning oil, and shows up when you are decelerating in gear, then you are looking at a bad oil control ring. Motor needs a rebuild, but Lucas can reduce the smoking enough to get you by.
3. If you obviously have coolant being pumped out the exhaust, then you have a bad coolant seal. Motor needs a rebuild. Or, you can try what I did (and had great success), which is documented in this thread:
