I actually found a 3rd piece of debris in the back of that valve that was keeping it open. Once removed, the valve closes completely. I re-installed it and turned the car on and it idled pretty good...still high, but consistent (1200). I was pretty happy at that point, but then once the car was warmed up, it started the idle hunting again...not quite the range that it did previously, but it still hunts.

i don't speak FD, but now that you've likely dealt with the idle air valve, look for whatever idle speed adjustment screw the FD has (i'm assuming there is one somewhere). someone previous to you may have tried adjusting it because of idle and now has it out of range where it's playing tag with the idle air valve.
