Broken Shifter? ( Orlando, FL )
I just purchased my first FC last week and taught myself how to drive 5spd ( been riding sportbikes for 6 yrs. ). I was about to head out to the car meet for the first time not looking like a poser, when my shifter **** started spinning at least 120 Degrees in both directions. Shifting is getting difficult and I am starting to grind gears especially going to 5th and reverse. Is this a quick fix or is major work involved like pulling thew tranny? Also is the clutch going to need to be replaced?
Damn I hate being a rookie!

If the shifter is just kind of "floppy", the problem may be the nylon bushings at the base of the shifter rod. Fairly common problem that can be repaired easily. Go to Mazdatrix.com (http://www.mazdatrix.com/g4.htm) to get an idea of what I'm referring to. There is also a link there to a video on how to install their short shifter. Not exactly what you will need to do, but it will give you a general idea of the procedure. Then give them a call (562-426-7960) to find out which parts you need.
If the shifter actually rotates as much as you say, you may require some additional parts. Only way to know for sure is to remove the shifter boot and the shifter to have a look. Get a copy of the free factory shop manual at one of the links in the 2nd gen FAQ for information on removing those components.

Just to expand on GO48's comments. The shift **** actually threads onto the shifter shaft. Untie the shifter boot and pull the cover down. If there is a nut, just tighten down the shift **** until you get it where you want it and raise the nut to lock them into place. If you are missing the nut, you can get a nylon locknut to replace it. Threads are different for S4 (86-88) and S5 (89+). S4=12x1.5, S5=10x1.25
Yesterday I went to Classic Mazda and purchased the plastic bushing and spring clip for the shifter. Haven't had a chance to install it yet but did run into another
RX7 Club member which was a big plus. Thanks for the info.
