Best clutch??

Ive got a 2nd gen turbo II, it makes between 285- 400 hp depending on the tune. I am going to be rebuilding the motor and want to replace the clutch, any suggestions? I do drive this on the road and the track so it can't be a ridiculous clutch that is for track use only, Im not picky just realistic.

I'd look into Exedy Clutches and find one that meets your proposed power levels.

Ok thanks, Have you used them before? I have talked to a few people and they were saying that exedy clutches in general don't grab very well and wear out fast. I think that they jet didn't have their clutch tuned correctly. I will look in to them, Thanks!

One thing I was told by the shop who did the rebuild and porting of my motor and had him put a fresh clutch kit while it was all apart. I asked about an aluminum flywheel and he talked me pretty quickly out of it. Now it's been at least 5 yrs but he said it would never start off smooth. It would always chatter. This shop is well known for building road and track Mazdas. I'll look for paper work find out the brand of clutch he put in my car. I also think he modified the clutch. Changed some springs I think. Sorry not much help in clutch make but I wanted to give you a heads up on the aluminum flywheel. I probably haven't put 3k miles on car since he did the work and it's a sweet set up. If you want more info just let me know and I'll find the bill so I can more details for you.

There's a big difference in the clutch needed for < 300HP and the one needed at 400HP. You essentailly have to size the clutch for 400HP. The most economical choice would be a copper puck clutch (sprung!!!) with a stock pressure plate. Fairly easy drive around town, will hold 400HP (note that it's torque that a clutch is rated at, not HP) and grip on quick shifts. It will wear out the flywheel and they don't like to be excessively slipped.

If you can stand a little more pedal effort, then an ACT organic disc with a slightly upgraded pressure plate will do the job with less flywheel wear, but will engage more abruptly.

Thank you guys for your help I have been looking at getting a lighter flywheel and clutch together, 10th anny you are saying that its bad to just get one the clutch or the flywheel but its ok to get them together? should I go with aluminum flywheel? I can one that weights 12 pounds vs 22 lbs stock or 17 lbs for the steel flywheel.

I have used exedy for years in my z's and my old supra... never any chattering, nor any other problems for that matter...

well I looked into getting the carbon twin and its like 1600 bucks, thats more than I am willing to spend, All mota rota were you able to get it cheaper somewhere?, for the hyper single with the flywheel it will cost about 1035.00 still pushing it but might be do able. For ACT I can get the a single plate good for 420 torque, for 380.00, and flywheel (crome-moly 13.8lbs) for 417.00. I am leaning towards ACT. Thoughts?

I've always had lots of luck with Spec clutches, not sure if they make one for your application, however, the price point is very friendly on the wallet, for a very capable product.
