Backfired and won't go into gear.

My friends and I replaced the clutch and the spark plugs. Unfortunately it wouldn't start. After charging the battery and jumping it, we finally got it to start. But it sounded much rougher than before, and the tachometer wouldn't work. Shortly after a massive bang came out of the exhaust. Mind you the previous owner straight piped it. My friend thought it backfired. It won't go into gear and for what ever reason the tachometer works again. I'm clueless what to do next but damn do I love this car and I only wish to make it work again. Please help and thank you.

Did you replace the input shaft bearing when you did the clutch?

What CAR are we talking about here?..SERIES???
did you bleed the clutch??
Double check the spark Plug wiring and make sure that the correct wires are going to the correct plugs from the coils.

Will the car go into gear when the car if not running?

try putting the car into 1st with the engine running with a bit of pressure on the shifter and clutch down, if the car begins to creep forward then your pilot bearing is trashed and stop the test before burning the synchro.
