Audio, Speakers, Fuses

Recently bought a 1991 N/A RX7. Front two door speakers were blown, so I bought some new Pioneer speakers as replacements. I wired them up, turned on my stereo, but they did not make any sound. All of the other speakers in the car work, just not the new ones. The speakers are brand new, and I tried switching the + and - the opposite way to see if I had the wiring wrong, but that still didn't help. Checked the fuse box at the drivers side in the footwell, all fuses are good, unplugged and re-plugged them all to make sure it wasnt a bad contact.

Does any one know of any other fuses, or places to look for that problem? Thanks

it's not a fuse so get that out ur head. is it the stock radio? check the wiring at the radio. maybe that part of the radio isn't working. what's ur experience with car audio and the wiring involved?

Don't the door speakers have their own amp? You'll need to tell us more about what stereo is in the car and what has been replaced, it sounds like maybe somebody unhooked the door speaker amp, or, there is an aftermarket radio and they couldn't figure out how to hook up 6 speakers

Thanks for the quick response! No, it is not the stock stereo, I bought the car without one. I bought an aftermarket deck. I have installed all of my own stereos since my first car, but that does not make me a professional. I use wiring harnesses off of ebay, so that could be part of the problem. Zero10, your reply has given me an idea. I remember that the stereo supported wiring for two FRONT speakers (left and right), and two REAR speakers (left and right). You mentioned that the RX7 has 6 speakers, so naturally, the two door speakers may not even be wired to the stereo currently at all. I will have to take a look this weekend. Would I be able to bundle the front dash and door speakers together without causing any power/electrical/audio problems?

If you run the front dash and door speakers in parallel then the impedance will probably be too low for your deck and may damage it. To do this properly you should either get higher impedance speakers for the fronts and doors, or add a separate amp for the door speakers.

To verify if this will be a problem check the minimum impedance of the deck, as well as the impedance of the front and door speakers. The inverse of the total impedance will be equal to the sum of the inverse of the impedances of the door and front speakers.

This is all of course assuming I am right and that your rx7 is supposed to, or already does, have a factory amp for the door speakers and I didn't imagine reading that.

Here is a link to the deck that I installed:

Here is a link to the speakers that I installed:

Those links dont offer a lot of information, but its all that I can offer. Thank you for your help!

Hey guys, I'm still stumped by this problem. I'm starting to think that the door amps are bad because it seems that the harness that I purchased is sending power to all the right places. I took a photo and included it here for you to see how I have it wired. Can you help me identify the door speaker wires??? The speakers I have in the doors definitely work because I swapped them with the dash speakers, and they worked great. It has to either be my wiring, or a bad amp. (Where is the amp?) Anyway, I appreciate the help! Thanks!

The connector on the left seems to be running rear speakers, and the connector on the right runs the front speakers, but I don't know where the wiring splits the front dash speakers with the front door speakers. I'm so lost.

check here for the service and wiring manuals for ur specific model.
http://foxed.ca/foxed/index.php?page=rx7manual

i say re-wire everything and do away with the factory amps. ur going to want to put aftermarket amps in later anyway.

The factory amps generally have a much worse signal to noise ratio than most modern amps, they have less power than most modern amps (although some would argue they still have enough) and many of them are starting to fail due to their age. In my opinion, your best bet at this point would be to add an amp for the door speakers (or door and rears or whatever you like if you buy a 4 channel amp) and re-wire them.
