Air gun and flywheel question.
So i bought an air gun to take my flywheel off with, and the air gun has a torque of 280. The atkinsrotary dvd says im gonna have to torque the flywheel back down from anywhere between 290-360 when i put it back on after my rebuild.
My question is, would a torque of 280 be sufficient to torque the flywheel back down because it's only 10 less pounds of torque, or should i go purchase another air gun to meet atleast 290?
I'm asking this because i really, really don't wanna screw up my rebuild...

An impact gun is really only good for taking the nut off and not putting it back on. You can't count on the rated torque to tighten.
What you will need is something to lock the flywheel from turning and maybe someone to hold the engine down (without the pan or oil pickup). Use a long breaker bar with a pipe and you can estimate the torque. For instance, if you applied 120 lb at 3ft away from the socket, you would have 360 ft-lb. It doesn't have to be exact, but using your bodyweight at some distance on the pipe will get you where you need to be.
If you still have to get the old flywheel nut off, that 280 ft-lb rated gun may not get the job done.

Since you already have air and since holding the the flywheel stationary is a bit of a PITA...especially if your working alone, you could consider getting a larger impact. I've had good luck with this: http://www.harborfreight.com/12-Prof...9-001b2166c2c0
gsl-se-addict is right, with a little sealant and thread-lock you don't have to get it perfect, just close. This will do it. And you have it for future use.
They tend to go on sale frequently, but it's pretty good low-buck performance. And I can testify it WILL remove the flywheel nut. It even has some (but not universal) success with the front hub bolt.

As the others have mentioned, it doesn't have to be perfect. You can use the gun to put your flywheel bolts back in, but dont tighten them with it. Use a torque wrench and set the proper torque.
Its just a good habit to get into, too many times have I seen people overtorque a bolt and shear the head off of it, and this is actually pretty common with flywheel bolts and big torque rated impact guns. (I understand you dont have one, but you can still shear the head off pretty easy while tightening them with a impact gun).

Are you thinking of pressure plate bolts? I agree those should be tightened using a torque wrench. But I've never heard of anyone shearing a flywheel bolt off with a 1/2" impact. At 54mm and going on to the end of the e-shaft it's pretty hefty.

Just my two cents - I was able to rent the torque wrench from a local rental shop for maybe twenty bucks. Twenty minutes later the nut was torqued and the I dropped off the wrench. Seems like a waste to buy such an expensive tool that you only need for this one nut. Good luck!
I wasn't recommending it JUST to torque the FW nut on. But IMO it's fine to do so.
It's also good for removing the FW nut too, which is even a bigger PITA. And that impact works for removing other stubborn stuff like axle nuts, and (as I said) limited success for that sumbitch front hub bolt. Seems like it's the quick application of torque that breaks them loose. Something you can't do as easily even with a breaker-bar.
And you'd still have it for all the other more routine uses.

Try taking Toe bolts out without an impact..

are flywheels always this hard to remove? Everything iv'e seen online is just an easy 1-2 hits and its off. I took the nut off and hit it a few times with the deadblow just inside the ring gear, just like everyone else, and it wouldn't come off, so i tried more and i ended up actually breaking my deadblow hammer lol (the flywheel is fine, no scratches or anything).
So i'm just wondering if theres another way to get it off if anyone knows of one?

Some ppl put loctite on the nut, some dont.
When u do, especially red, it will take a while. Dont ask me how i inow.
Impact works with taking it off. Might take a while. But if u have a large compressor with gun thats rated at least 400 lbs, maybe 10-15 mintues of banging might get it off.
To put it back on, there is a pretty simple method. Get a torque wrench thats capable of 150 lbs, which should be cheap. Find a way to stop the flywheel from moving. Either a flywheel stopper tool or stick a pry bar into it. Torque the nut to 150 first. Then use a magic marker to mark one of the apex on the nut, at the next apex put a mark on the flywheel. Now take ur impact back out and bang it until 2 mark matches. That way u will have about 350 ft lbs of torque. To be safe, u should always use loctite on the nut.
U just need to tap the flywheel lighty with something soft a few times, u broke ur dead blow hammer? Buy a new one u cheap ***. When u do it, always keep the nut on the flywheel. Cuz without the nut the flywheel might just fly out and if it lands on ur foot its gg dude.
