Advice on timing

I have a carbed FC with a FB distributor and am wondering wich way is advanced and retarded on the leading and trailing and what would you recomend for the trailing if I had to turn the distributor clockwise all the way for the idle to sound decent? Thanks

Have you downloaded a copy of the 1st gen FSM yet?

Yeah I read it and it only told me which way trailing was, advanced was pulling it out. How do you find TDC on the pulley I cant see any red or yellow marks on it?

I found out that leading timing advanced is clockwise. So what would you recomend for the trailing if I had to turn the distributor all the way advanced at idle. Also since I do not have the distributor hooked up to vacuum and I had to run it all the way advanced for the idle to sound good do you think the distributor is one tooth off? Everything sounds good at idle and lower rpm's its just at 4,000 rpm's and beyond it just doesent sound right to me.

The dizzy vacuum lines need to be connected, then you can set the leading and trailing timing according to the FSM.

Finding TDC is a bit more complicated. Are you SURE there aren't any markes on the pulleys? There should be two little notches on the edge that passes by the pointer. Right mark is leading, left mark is trailing.

If you need to find TDC then the most straightforward way is to remove the bolt from the front hub (warning: http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/pulley.htm ) then rotate the engine until the eccentric keyway is at 9 o'clock. That is TDC.

Ok thanks Aaron I found the marks just the paint was worn off and marked them and got the timing straight. It just has a small miss a idle but, is running better than it ever has.

The only thing left that im not getting is where is TDC at compared to the yellow and red marks are they ATDC or before and which way is ATDC and BTDC counterclockwise left or clockwise right? Right now I have it 15* to the right clockwise of the yellow mark and when I rev it to 4000 rpms it goes about another 15* to a third mark on the pulley that I didnt know existed does this sound ok?
