A detailed how-to is not necessary.
1) Take it to a shop that will discharge it properly.
2) The A/C system forms a loop of tubing. Find the nearest A/C part and remove it. Remove each piece attached to it. Continue until you're out of parts or you run out of things within your abilities / motivation to remove.
3) If you've removed the compressor, determine the correct new belt to use without the compressor in place or install an appropriate idler pulley. I don't own an 89 so offhand I can't suggest your final answer but that's the basic idea on compressor removal.
