93 FD Help

Hi guys, I am new to the forum. I just bought my third RX7, it's a 1993 automatic touring FD that just broke 100,000 miles. My last two were FCs. I traded my 2003 350Z enthusiast with 153,000 miles on it for the FD yesterday... Now let me start with the problems. It has a salvage title. The previous owner said it was because the stereo, seats and wheels were previously stolen. I took it to my local Mazda dealership and they did a full inspection. The underside showed evidence that the car wasn't straight, the turbos are on their last leg, and there is a multitude of leaks from everything imaginable... I felt sick after the technician personally showed me the underside of the car... I called the previous owner back up and he offered to either trade back, or pay for the turbo rebuild and send me a manual transmission he had sitting around.. Please help guys. Is it worth it to keep the FD? I feel sick about the whole situation and I need more opinions. My Z was in very good condition. But I love the FD. I make minimal wage though so I don't have a ton of money to throw around.... All advice and encouragement is welcome!

Sorry man about your luck.
2 things..Salvage title and a minimum wage job..instant disaster.
Personally I would have run..But if the guy wants to trade back..RUN back.
You can always car shop later when your finances get better..the cars don't just disappear.

I would get 350z back. no matter how much money you throw into the FD the frame isnt straight. It will never give you that proper driving experience.

You've owned the car for only a few hours and you're already having doubts. You don't have alot of money to spend and the car is unfamiliar to you enough that you're moved to post a thread on a forum for advice. Enough said.

Thanks guys... He said he'd trade back but now he wants me to pay for the blown turbos. He said they weren't blown when we traded, yet I never even boosted the car on the way home... This whole situation sucks.

If you're already having doubts, I would trade it back if he's offering to give back your Z. Just sell your Z or wait for a better deal for a fd to come along.

If it comes to it, I'd go ask far as to take it to court and bring your receipts and work orders with you. Turbos dont blow in a matter of days. His story won't fly in court.

Rrright....take someone to court because he bought broken down used car knowing it had a salvage title, didn't have it inspected until after the purchase, and paid more than he could practically could afford. Then kept it for a few days, had buyers remorse and the owner wouldn't go back on the deal.
He'll have more in attorney's fees than the car is worth and a year later still get laughed out of court...even in California.
I don't like seeing these threads, and not happy that the OP is in trouble. But at some point personal responsiblity has got to kick in. There are two sides to every story, but even going only by his account, this is trouble of his own making. All this talk about sueing people is nonsense. Part the car out or sell it whole...but learn from it.

Honestly man. Keep the car and do either an Ls swap in it or a 2j and call it a day. But if you down have the money you might have taken a big hit. Good luck man. It's a very hairy situation

You are right Sgtblue, I did make a big mistake. The guy seemed super nice and I trusted him.. I'm too trusting of people. How much do you guys think I could sell it for?

Yeah. That's true too. Its really comes down to personal responsibility to check out the car before finalizing. Just shocked that he has the nerve to make you pay for his blown turboes to trade back.
Some people....
Keep the car and buy a daily to use for now or find a way to trade back.
Court....... in serious instances. Lol. :p

Just an update: I've had the FD for probably a little over two months now, and I fall more in love with it each day! It does have a large share of problems, but I think she is worth the hard work to get her pristine again.. I've come to the conclusion that the smoke is from bad oil control rings. So I need a rebuild. And the auto transmission is tired (trying to piece together a manual swap). I have a long road ahead of me, especially as a full time student. Any advice would be much appreciated! My goal for the car is a "zippy" Street car with light track use. My goal is 400hp. That is far off in the future though, for awhile I am just going to be replacing broken and worn down items. I also plan on adding JDM back seats, I like the look and they could be useful in a tight situation where I need to drive more than one passenger. I want to keep the appearance of the car mostly stock. Slight drop with Racing Beat springs and some combo of struts. What do you guys think?

Hope you get it all sorted out and get to enjoy it. I would make sure everything frame and suspension wise can be brought back within spec and have it aligned before sinking any money into it. Like others have mentioned thats the most important, not just for the performance of the car but for saftey as well. As long as thats all good then modify it and have fun with it

Trade back! I would be really upset and would not trust the previous owners word at all. I would be shocked if he actually traded back. Sorry about your luck.

When I bought my fd a few months ago I got to drive it around the neighborhood once before it had to be parked for a rebuild, so i know how your are feeling about having to rebuild something you just got. I think you will love the car once you get it rebuilt and set up the way you like it. Just be patient while you are in school and hopefully when you graduate you will have the money to turn it into your dream. Way cooler than a 350z!

I had it checked and it has already been straightened. My biggest problem as of right now is the engine stalling 50% of the time when I come to a complete stop. I cannot figure out if it is due to the engine or the transmission. If I put it neutral as I come to a stop it won't stall, which makes me think it is the transmission.
