88 rx7 engine replacement

88 rx7 conv with engine bay damaged by fire. What is the best engine to replace the old one?

To answer you question, I would think a 13B S4 or S5 would most probably be the best engine to replace the old one (best as in easiest) .. or possibly a 13B TII if you are looking for more performance.

My recommendation is to buy another 86-88 13B engine. Replace the engine with the exact engine that is currently in the car. This makes the job much simpler. You will of course have to replace the wiring harness and any other items that were damaged by the fire.

just to add a quick note to your thread/question: did you ever find the cause of the fire? if you haven't figured it out and addressed it, then you may be setting yourself up for another fire.

good chance fire was due to leaking fuel pulsation dampener. Either way, almost everything will be replaced under the hood anyways.

that's actually the assumption i made, too. i phrased it in a general fashion simply because it was my assumption, and lord knows i have been wrong plenty.
