86 GXL how do I make it quieter?
Hello,
My 86 GXL has a racing beat downpipe + presilencer going to y-pipe to ractive mufflers (the bullet style ones..). I recently posted about buying a racing beat exhaust and I ended it off of kijiji. Well.... it turns out only the downpipe is racing beat, everything else is another brand. I got it installed with hopes of it being quieter than the previous exhaust but it sounded similar to what was on it before. I still think it is extremely loud and it seems to drone a lot around 2k rpm but once it goes higher the sound gets deeper and doesn't drone. My question is that will getting different mufflers quiet it down enough? If what kind of mufflers should I be looking for? I was also considering putting on resonators. Hope to hear from some of you soon! Thanks

If you're running all straight pipe that's why its loud. Unless your mufflers have huge tips.
I had a borla exhaust on my na and racing beat header (no cat), it was pretty loud for its size due to having no cat or resonator.
It's very similar to the rb cat back, but not as expensive.

Hi thank you for your replies. The tips on the mufflers are pretty big. I was thinking of going to a local shop to look at Dynomax and Magnaflow mufflers because I read a thread that did mention that one of the two were quiet and flows well. Do you guys think that these could be good alternatives to the Racing Beat? I do not have lots of money to spend but I am willing to spend a decent amount in order to quiet it down to a tolerable level. I find that after driving the car.... I have always come out with a slight headache... and it would be nice if I could change that. I appreciate everyones help!
Anything that's the same size inlet as your exhaust piping should flow fine,
obviously you want the exit/tips bigger than the piping, overdoing it will be overkill and make it way louder than it needs to ben
My old exhaust was dual 2" runners on header to single 2.5" collector up to the y pipe then dual 2" again. Not sure what size the tips were my guess is close to 3", if your tips are big they're probably close to 4"
Rotary engines are just loud by nature with a free flowing exhaust, hard to keep super quiet.

Ive had amazing luck with magnaflow mufflers in the past. Deep low tone at idle but quiet when driving. I plan to use one on my rotary along with a resonator for its straight through design while maintaining a tollerable tone.
