Hi,

ok so i bought myself an 86 fc about a week ago and the car overheats. The guy i bought it from said it just needs the thermostat replaced and it will be fine. So i went out and got the thermostat and the gasket from Mazda and replaced it and the car still overheats.

I am somewhat new to the rotary but i know that overheating is the main cause of the motor dying out. I haven't flushed or put new coolant in yet but it does have coolant in the car and it's not low or too high. has a new fan clutch and the belts are fairly new.

Any help id appreciate it.

If it has bee radically overheated many times, housings may have warped or coolant o-rings may have been damaged. If this is the case, then the engine will fairly consistently overheat and consume coolant.

 

1. Take a sample of coolant to a radiator shop, have it chemically tested for exhaust gases. If present, the engine is in need of a rebuild. If not, ...
2. Pull the radiator, have it rodded and flow checked;
3. Check the operation of the thermal clutch for the radiator fan

an easier way to check for exhaust gases in the coolant is just to open the radiator cap before you start the car, start it up, and let it idle for a while until it gets up to temp. if compression is leaking into the cooling system, you'll see bubbles in the coolant reservoir. follow the other two things ^he mentions too.

 

you should check all coolant related lines and even the heater core, which, may be leaking enough to lose coolant.
