WI 84' RX-7 problem

Good morning and thanks for inviting me in! I have a 1984 RX-7 that I am having problems with. After starting the car and driving a short distance, all of the lights on the dash come on and car shuts down and cannot re-start. This has now happened many times and am unable to figure it out. If I wait a bit sometimes the car will start again, but obviously now I cannot drive it. Looking for hints or suggestions? Thanks

welcome to the board.

okay, let's start with the basics.

how long have you had the car? when was the last tuneup? did the car sit for an extended period of time (2 years or more)?

could be something as simple as a fuel filter or could be something more complicated. i guess we'll all see.

I bought it from an auction house last fall and yes, believe it sat for an extended period of time. Has 57,xxx original miles. Immediately took to my buddies shop and did a complete look over, replacing brake lines, etc. Seemed to run well but now this issue.

well, i would suggest starting with a complete tuneup. after that (or as a part of that), dive into the fuel system and see what you find. as i said, it could simply be a clogged fuel filter or it could be that there is rust/particulates in the tank. when you go to change the fuel filter, take note of the gas coming out (how it looks and smells, etc.).

get a copy of the FSM: Foxed.ca - this is a very valuable resource.

congratulations on getting something with that kind of mileage. does the body and interior reflect the mileage? post a couple photos when you get a minute.
