CA 84 gsl-se, new to this

just bought an 84gsl-se, and im super stoked on it.car has been well maintained and seems to be in good running order. i bought it in hopes to make a nice lil streetable performer. i eventually would like to go turbo...but for now i would like to just build up whats there. so my question is, what the best place to start? what can i do away with? what should i get first? ive always built old hotrods and and things of that sort, but this is all new to me..i have been doing some research however, so i am familiar with the jist of it. open to suggestions!!!

With rotary engines, you always start with the exhaust system. What will your state allow as far as modifying it? Ya gotta go a little bigger and get rid of all the kinks in the system installed by the factory.

im not worried about the restrictions laws here in cali. i want max performance. will a header and strait pipe do the trick?

While you mentioned it was well maintained, you never know what was done and how long ago. A good idea, and not a lot of money, is to change ALL your fluids. Oil and filter are the first place to start, then do transmission fluid and differential fluid (you'll hate transmission change; it's a bear to refill) , flush the radiator, brake fluid, power steering fluid, clutch. Run it for a few miles (maybe empty the tank) then change the fuel filter.
After the fluids, and again inexpensively, change the spark plugs and wires. you'll be glad you did. The you can get to the business of making it the car of your dreams.
I rebuilt a low mileage (43K) 84 GSLSE, and changed out everything. It runs beautifully and is a thrill to drive. Good luck.

I agree with Mario, exhaust is the way to go.
