Anyone have or know of a good step by step write up on converting the 12a engine into fuel injection, or possibly a write up on how to install a newer RX-7 engine into my 84?

See the 1st gen FAQ for info on installing a newer 13B. Long story short, you'd need to swap the front cover to your 1st gen cover, use a GSL-SE oil pan, match the flywheel, clutch and counterweight to you transmission, and a few other things.

As for fuel injection, it again depends on the direction. You'll need to modify the stock system with an EFI pump and a feed and return line. Then it's your choice of ECU to control it. Common choices are Haltech, Microtech and Megasquirt.
