AK 82 gsl not running right.

so i got an 82 gsl 12a the motor itself seems to bee in decent shape, only 122k

but the previous owner took ALL the emissions parts off.... i have most of them aside from the air pump. "rats nest" is gone.

the car is hard to start, smokes a little when you start it up but goes away immediately(p/o said he put 2stroke oil in the gas) it idles at about 1500
theres a light on the dash( exhaust overheat?)

it has a full 2.5 exhaust block to bumper..

my question is what parts do i need to put back to make this all go away, or does none of those affect this and the carb needs a rebuild? from what i can tell the carb is functioning properly, primarys and secondarys are working perfect.

im not too concerned with the internal heath as once it starts its got wayyyyyy more than 100hp. im almost thinking its ported.. because it will not idle smooth under 1000. and even with a clutch that wont hold past 1/4 throttle it still gets sideways.

Oh gods of the rotary please shine down apon me an deliver me from driving striaght and allow me to slide into the promised land...

AK

so i've been playing with a few things and i think i've got it almost right.. it idles at about 1k now starts right up in the morning, but still doesn't like to start when hot, i read something about a hot start valve? where would one find it? and whats it look like? i dont think i have one...

this guy capped off everything. nothing to the air cleaner, only a few lines here and there.

and get this! the oil proportioning valve arm isnt hooked to anything...its all bent and mangled.

First...pirmix... 1oz 2 stroke oil to 1 gal gas if your omp is not working as you say and you don't you will kill the engine.

Second, we need some pic to be able to tell what your dealing with (engine bay and engine close up)

Like Roto said...premix the gas with 2 stroke oil until you get your oil metering pump repaired and verifiy that it is working. Hot start valve? not sure. We do have hot start assist on these cars however. If you look at your carb, you might see 3 cables goin to it. One is your throttle, one is your choke, and one is your hot start...it goes back to a motor on the pass fenderwall. The motor's job I believe is to tug the cable for a hot start it mimics giving a little throttle as you crank the key. Makes a cool noise too...lol The only cable you really do need is throttle however...choke and hot start are clutter IMO. Keep in mind that a poor hot start can be just as indicative about engine condition as a poor cold start. Good luck and enjoy your new RX.

so i did a compression test..i took the valve out of my tester and tried all 4 holes each with an opposing spark plug in place.

at operating temp i got 90psi on all 3 front and back.. seems good to me, a little low for a piston engine but i have no idea what a rotary is supposed to be.

after i read a post that described my symptoms being related to a bad apex.. i had to make sure.

and i think most of my issues are due to the condition of my cap and rotor. which will be here on tuesday, along with a water pump, thermostat, wires, plugs, and air, fuel, oil filters.

theres almost no contacts left in the cap. the air filter is trash the plugs are ok but still in need of replacement.

cant wait to get the tune up done so i can really see how it runs.
