'81 rx7 need suggestions

I just bought an '81 rx7 and the engine is in pretty bad condition so i want to swap it out. I was wondering what engine should i go with on a 2k-3k budget. I live in Vegas and the drift scene is pretty strong here with a few local events held throughout the year. i want to eventually enter one of the events with the rx7 and i was wondering what engine/mods would you guys recommend to make it into a pretty good drift car.
thanks

For $2K you will just want to replace the engine with another stock unit.

For $3K, you might squeak by with a 13BT if you are good at scrounging parts.

Not a lot of 1st gens in drifting, but of course there are fewer of them altogether too. They are lighter and simpler than a 2nd gen. They have a solid rear end, where the 2nd gen has independant rear suspension, but with a limited slip they can still be a lot of fun to throw around into drifts.

For anything suspension related, check out www.re-speed.com
For a performance carb see www.sterlingmetalworks.com
