IN 79 Nikki Carb/Apex lube

I just got into a Cherry 79 that has been well taken care of. Drove her 2 hours home and smiled all the way home. So far all I have done is put some new plugs in, and cleaned it up a little. Car is all original except for aftermarket cruise and stereo gear. This car has a brand new distributor and A/C Compressor, Runs good and idles fine BUT I'm not convinced the carb is right. Running up to 3500 rpm is pretty common for these cars, from 3500 up I think there should be more power there. No power unless you nail to open the other two barrels. If i hold her at 4500 i feel the car hesitate briefly every 5-10 seconds. It's like she wants to go but somthing is holding her back.
I can cherp the tires is 2nd but there's no chance of me getting 3rd. My last 1st gen would consistently chirp 3rd and every once in a while I would get a mini chirp hitting 4th. The 79 car is lighter than my old 83 and has the same motor, so theres no reason why I shouldn't be able to chirp 3rd. Your thoughts?

I think I Need carb help. I cleaned the carb intake with some intector cleaner. Not sure if that would hurt the apex seals since they need to stay lubricated. Which leads me to my next question. The oil injection lines that hook on the bottom of the carb. How do I know they are working? The area is dirty looking so at one time oil must have come out of one of the lines. Has anyone checked there oil injections into the intake?

I notice in the documentation that no oil was used during the cycle. I thought they where supposed to use some oil to lube the seals.

I run Force fuel conditioner in all my cars including the rx7. Not sure if any of you have discovered this product yet, if not you will.

Help me understand if my expectations are to high.

I can't help you much on the carb issue since I don't touch "controlled fuel leaks" myself. However I did have a '78 with the exact same symptoms. The issue was simply dirt and trash in the carb. A rebuild cured it. This would be especially important if the car had been sitting.

Pretty sure the '78/'79 is heavier then the '83 due to the thermal reactor exhaust.

As for the metering oil lines, there are instructions in the Haynes and FSM to check the flow from the pump. Essentially it involves disconnecting the lines from the carb and redirecting them into a measuring flask to measure how much oil flows over a specific time period.

Lots of information on your carb can be found here: www.sterlingmetalworks.com

There are writeups on troubleshooting, etc.

Nice find man! Now you've got to get a free flowing exhaust on there, and a Sterling carb. Maybe then you'll be chirping 3rd gear...

Arron - Thank you for your input. Sounds like I need to get rid of the stock exhust. Most of the systems I've heard are a little to loud for my taste. The stock exhust could be a little louder, do you have a recommendation for exhust systems?

Did you ever upgrade the wheels on the 78? I would like to on my 79 but I'm not sure what will fit.

Kentetsu - That Sterling site has me thinking. He seems like a good guy to have on your team. It's amazing that you can get almost dubble the CFM with a simple mod. Are you going to get one of his carbs?

Pitch,

Carb: I've been using a Sterling carb for a few years now. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who wants performance from their 12a. In my signature line is a link to some of my videos, check them out sometime to get an idea of how much an improvement it really makes.

Exhaust: Pretty much the only bolt on system you're going to find is from Racing Beat. I wish there were other options, but everyone else pretty much died off. Some people have pieced together systems that were less expensive, and sounded really nice, but it takes some research to find the right components to use. The biggest problem is that the rotary's exhaust is so damn hot, it will melt through most standard exhaust pipes and mufflers. Spend some time running some searches in the 1st gen technical section and you will find some options. Stay away from Pace Setter (junk).
