With a '78, absolutely start with the exhaust. Get rid of that thermal reactor and put on a "header". Since the Nikki is jetted rich to keep that thermal reactor hot, adding a header and good, free-flowing exhaust won't lean you out like normal, it'll put you right in the sweet spot for the Air/Fuel ratio.

Sounds like you are in for a long/big project. Clean it up and work on safety and reliability items first. Here's a couple of links that you might be needing:

Carb info: www.sterlingmetalworks.com
Stock parts: www.rockauto.com
Performance parts: www.re-speed.com

Good luck.

Wow... nice. Got pics?? You sound really excited about modding it and putting on the widebody kit and all, but focus on the engine for now.
