CA 2nd Gen tips / tricks for making an engine run more smoothly / quieter?

So I am trying to make sure that everything in my new wonderful rx7 is running well, so I am trying to go around and eliminate all random noises in the engine bay ie. squeaks, rattles, etc.

Has anyone on here had any experience with that sort of thing? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

PS. I am pretty much trying to teach myself how to work on cars in my spare time, starting from scratch. There are vast holes in my automotive knowledge, so I apologize if that was a stupid question. Lol

well first, you need to figure out where these" squeaks and rattles" are originating from before anyone can provide assistance.

Okay, well first off it sounds like I have some sort of air leak. When I rev my engine it starts to get higher in pitch, really picking up in sound around 4000 rpm. Any tips on how to find air leaks? I have so many hoses running around my engine I don't really know where to start.

Edit: It sounds like it's coming from somewhere around the throttlebody.

I would try spraying some kind of flammable liquid lightly around the suspected area while the engine is running, ONLY after you have made sure that the liquid will not ruin any plastic near the area and that there is no way that any open flame or other source is there to ignite it. You will find the leak when your rpms go up. at least this is how I found the leak on another car I was working on. Found out the intake mani had a leak between the head and flange.

other side of the coin is to use a spray bottle of water and see where spraying it bogs your engine down/affects the idle. much safer.

or you could just start poking and prodding vacuum lines and see where it gets louder. if moving the lines about with your finger doesnt work then chances are you have a gasket that needs replacing. Chnaces are you should change out your vacuum lines anyway.
