1st Gen--> Stock Grease in engine bay?

I noticed that there is this line of grease in the engine bay of my 1982 Rx7 GSL. Is there a reason for this? Does it protect the bay or something? It looks ugly. It sort of looks like rust from the right angle.

You means the black stuff by the strut towers? Just looks like it had oil over it at some stage and the heat has cooked it. If you look at other pictures, this is not normal. I would get the kerosene out and get scrubbing. Rusty
