AL 1990 rx7 n/a charging system and start problems

Just got this car a week ago 90 rx7 vert n/a and batt and alt. both showed bad. replaced both and everything has been running great until I got in yesterday and started it up and all the dash lights came on and I noticed alt gauge was low like it was when I got it. I also noticed the first time I tried to crank it, It just clicked and then spun over the next time. Also when I rev up to about 4g all lights go off but volt gauge doesn't move. So I started looking for bad grounds and the only thing I came across was a little wire with a small square black box on the end with a metal tab on top of it. the little box fell off in my hand as it was only holding by one wire. so I tried grounding the wire and when I did that, it pegged out the oil pressure gauge but goes back to normal when not grounded. HELP PLEASE!!

The wire you grounded is the oil pressure sender condensor and you do not want to ground that wire or you will damage your oil gauge so remove the ground immediately. The condensor is not really needed so just the tape the wire and leave be.

Where did you get the replacement alternator? When the alternator is failing it causes the warning lights to illuminate. The lights should all turn on w/key to on but engine not running in case you were not aware of that aspect. Sounds like you have a poor alternator replacement. You have the large Black wire bolted to the alternator. This is the output wire and you can measure it w/your voltmeter set to DCv. It should read 14.4 volts if it is running perfectly. Your voltage gauge can also be iffy and not represent the true output of the alternator. And always make sure the connections to this circuit is good and clean.

yeah after much research yesterday I found out about the oil switch grnd and left it alone. last night I traced down all grounds and cleaned them and replaced bolts. I got the alt from advance (tough one). I haven't ruled out being a bad replacement as having been in the industry for a while I know you can get bad parts. they are ordering me a new one should be in tomorrow. Got a bud of mine comin over today with volt meter (something I need to buy) to check actual voltage. If you think of any other possibilities let me know. Thanks for the reply.
Also the original alt tested good off the car but bad while on car if that puts any thoughts out there.
