WI 1990 GXL Catalytic Converter Question

My catalytic converter seems to making loud noises like that of an exhaust leak? When sitting inside the cargo the sound is definately coming from directly underneath. So would i need to replace it? Also, i looked underneath and there seems to be a metal piping of some sort hanging off the converter. Any suggestions?

The metal pipe hanging off is the split air pipe, which brings air from the air pump to the cat. If it's just hanging there, you've found your noise. The flange may have rusted through.

Otherwise, the easiest way to find exhaust leaks is to raise the car and start it up, carefully using your hand to feel around the flanges for exhaust gasses (caution, HOT!).

Sounds like the metal hanging off could be the problem. Cheapest way out would be to weld it back on, or to weld the break shut.
