MO 1983 rx7 tailight

I've had my 83 for about 4 years. Recently had it inspected and failed because of the cracked plastic over the driver tailight. Is that clear plastic actually part of the taillight or just a cover? I might argue it's just aesthetic and should pass. The standard is that a cracked taillight lens won't pass because it may allow moisture in. I've already spent too much on this car recently (a recent transmission and starter rebuild for $1,300) and it won't really be worth what it might take to replace the light assembly. I am done with this car otherwise and if it doesn't pass, it won't be worth much. There are like 20 miles on the rebuild. Motor leaks but runs fine. Would love to keep this car (it's just my fun car). Is there a way to just replace the clear plastic?

I will add that I would actually hate to see anything happen to this car. It's in pretty good shape. I bought it from a couple that had it for 20+ years and always kept it garaged. Interior is nearly perfect, paint is great (some scrapes) and it has always started except for when the battery died and the fuel pump when out, even on the coldest winter days and still under 100k miles after 3 years of driving.

I might suggest looking under the classified section. Maybe put up a want add. I am sure someone can hook you up With the part for a cheap price.

I agree, you should be able to find a cheap tail light if you post your need in the classified section.

Also check your local junkyard, I recently picked up two complete "like new" tail lights for $40 each. Any year between 1981-1985 will fit your car.

Here is a listing for a pair of lens for $90 on ebay:

Don't give up a great ride, keep your 7 running!

If its the long piece of plastic then no its just a cover. Beneath that cover will be 2 or 3 (can't remember) smaller pieces of plastic with screws holding them in and a rubber gasket underneath them. The cover is just a pop off with the weather stripping around it glued on. It comes off quite easily since the glue is old so it might just be worth it to rip the thing off(gently) in front of the guy trying to fail you. When you get home use rtv silicone to reseal the gasket and cover back to the body, I also hear that it helps keep the gas smell out of the cab but I haven't noticed, in fact I quite like it.
