1983 GSL high rpm start up
1983 Rx-7 (first gen.) when it starts the engine is just racing(3000 to 4K RPM). I think at this point it could be a timing thing? I just been trying stuff... anyone have any awesome suggestions Please. This car sat for too long...The Carb and probably the intake too is actually off an 82(tried both that I have). I did find at least one stuck float and accelerator pump is leaky now. I have totally molested the mixture screw and the idle screw is turned back so far its ready to fall out. The exhaust is a header/muffler test pipe at this time. and I am having a few issues with vacuum hoses not having homes. I am used to my simple 79 carb with idle and mixture screws. A really good set of close up pictures of a stock 1983 GSL Carburetor/ controls and hose, cable, wire routing on top of the intake and engine would be an enormous contribution to this project should anyone have a stock car to photograph.

having never owned a '79, I wouldn't swear to it, but I don't think the Nikkis changed so much that the basic adjustments are THAT different. that said, your best bet would be to get a copy of the '83 FSM from foxed.ca.
to me it sounds like you have vacuum leak(s), however with you playing around with the adjustment screws, it will be an uphill battle to set things right again. as long as you never physically removed the distributor, the timing should not be so far out of range that the usual method of adjustment can't handle restoring it.
start with replacing all the vacuum lines, then work on the carb adjustments.

Just the fact that there is no idle screw on the body of the 82 carb is huge difference to guy how has been nursing a 79 rx-7 since 94. I think my question is how mutt can I make it. 83 car 82 carb 82 dist test pipe exhaust and 81 oil cooler and radiator. I guess my question is can bad timing make the engine race or surge to high rpm from startup.
