1980 rx7 carb issues

Hi I have a 1980 rx7 with a 12a rotary motor. It runs, backfires like all the others but I cannot take the car over 6k or it turns off. The third and fourth barrels of the Carb will not open. Can someone please help me. This problem may end up forcing me to get rid of the car and I really don't want to. If anyone is near ephrata pa and can help me please help!!!!!"

wont go over 6k or it turns off - sounds like it may be just running the bowls out of gas. if u let off for a little bit and then get back on it, does it pick back up?

+1. Replace the fuel filter and then try again.

we checked all that. Its stock Carb. Fuel is getting to it fine. This is why we are so confused. We are mechanics and we can't figure this car out. Its being stubborn.

If you are telling me that the fuel filter has already been replaced, then that's good. If not, then do so. Even when brand new, the filter just barely keeps up with the demands of the carb. If performance drops (due to partial clogging) by even 5 or 10% you will begin starving at higher rpms.

So, even though you are getting gas to the carb while idling, it can still be starving once the motor gets hungry.

You mention that the secondaries are not opening, but how did you determine this? I'm guessing that this is an assumption made based on the symptoms you are seeing. Since the secondaries are vacuum actuated, you won't be able to tell just by revving the motor in idle. However, if you are positive that this is the problem then you might consider modifying the carb for mechanical actuation of the secondaries. This is very simple to do, and you can find instructions in the 1st Gen FAQ section.

Best of luck.
