1979 12a Front Strut Question

Hi this is my first post! I'm new to the site and the RX7 world. Not very mechanical but just got totally reamed by a local mechanic so I'm diving in head first. Getting ready to order rear shocks and front strut cartridges for my 1979 first gen RX7. Decided on the KYB shocks and struts because I'm just looking for inexpensive, street, OEM ride. I figure they are still going to be a big improvement over the leaking 34 yr. old shocks. My question is: Do I have to remove the front wheel hubs and backing plate to change out the front struts? According to my Haynes manual I do but watching Youtube videos on other cars (non RX7's) it looks easy without removing all that. Are the KYB's a mistake and should I go with Tokico's for any other reason as stated above? Thanks!
