13b swap into 83 gsl
I just recently bought my first rotary. It is an 83 fb gsl. I want to swap in a 13b. so far from doing research on this forum I have decided my best options would be a gsl-se 13b, a n/a second gen 13b, or a turbo second gen 13b. I have an extremely tight budget and I was wondering a coupe things. First, which of these engines would be the best bang for my buck. second, i have read people saying that a second gen turbo 13b will not hook up to my 83 5 speed. Is this true or not? And third, Where is the best place to buy good cheap used 13bs because I am a college student and I am broke as all hell. Thank you for reading and i look forward to your responses

Well, if you are after power than the 13B-T from a 2nd gen will be the best bang for the buck. With only minor upgrades that would likely take place during the swap (exhaust, TID, FCD, injectors) it would be a bit over 200HP. You'd need to either go to a front mount intercooler or add a scoop to the 1st gen hood. To fit this engine you'd need a GSL-SE front cover and oil pan, then you'd need to modify the front cover or pan for an turbo oil drain. By swapping on the 1st gen flywheel and clutch assembly it would mate up to the transmission without an issue.
If you just want a daily driver with a 13B and don't care about power, the easiest swap is the GSL-SE 13B. Problem is that these engines are getting just plain old and worn out. Unlike the 13B-T they aren't available as j-spec cores as they were a North America only engine. It would bolt right in with a few minor changes.
Honestly if you are broke as hell, best save up some money. 'Cause it's not just the engine, it's also the electronics to control it and the appropriate mods to the rest of the car...your GSL is carbureted so it would involve converting the fuel system to something compatible with EFI.

Thank you for the insight. I'm really thinking the 2nd gen 13bt would be the engine I would want. What all would need to be done to the fuel system to make it EFI compatible?
