I belive you must use part of the pre existing air intake duct to attach that filter to the air intake manifold.
And or manufacture a duct to make the filter reach the front (coldest) part of the engine bay.

Im suprised on how little reseach is done on here. I read my butt off on here, and i don't have much left to lose. Ive asked these very questions myself to the most knowledgeible guys on here. Last answer i got was that the car being stock is already set up as a cold air induction setup. Stick a k@n in your stock airbox and get the same results. And with the heat the rotary generates, your almost taking away power with a short open airfilter unless you run your piping away from the engine bay. From what i see the only benefit is to make your own and dont even bother buying a ebay kit as you can go to advance or other shops of the same nature and buy all the piping and couplers you'd need right off the shelf.

Let's clear this up Canuck!..lol!
You take off the snorkel piece that is held to the rad and the air filter box.Take off the air filter box and remove the AFM.
attach the adapter to the AFM and then attach the filter to the AFM.Secure the Afm/filter assembly and make sure it is Flat,( as in the flat part is showing, and it is not all cockeyed.)
You will have a hose left over, going to the Air pump.If you take that off, toss a small filter on the air pump, that will take car of that.

The kit that you bought is actually for an 86-88 model (Series 4) that has a square airflow meter (AFM) inlet and therefore needs the aluminum square-to-round adapter piece shown on top of the "A" on the AEM sticker in the picture.

Your car is an 89-91 (Series 5) model and has a round AFM inlet and therefore the round filter should fit directly on the AFM. Use the hose clamp to keep it in place. You should be able to sell the adapter for about $20.

You may need to buy or fabricate some more hardware to securely mount the system in place, similar to mounting an aftermarket stereo system.

If you want to retain your air pump, then buy a "crankcase vent" filter at your local auto parts shop. Measure the hose inlet or bring it along to make sure you get the correct size.

Here is an example of a similar kit installed on a Series 4 car:

Do not oil your new AEM Dryflow filter. See here for servicing instructions:
