Re: VA Sprint Karting

Sort of... I bought a kart a few years ago but then had a few things come up (marriage, kids, etc) before I actually got around to racing it. I dusted it off this fall and have been doing a little refurbishment in the hopes of getting out to the racetrack with it when the weather warms up. Its a older european kart, 1998 or so with a KT100. It was originally direct drive with a pipe but I don't think that class exists around here anymore so I installed a clutch and am eyeing a WKA pipe or can class. My current thought is setting it up for WKA Yamaha Medium at Nicholson Speedway on the Eastern Shore, although I've never been there.

When I played with it before, I ran practices at Monrovia near Frederick, MD but I think that track may have closed. Sandy Hook north of Baltimore is an option but I think thats nearly all 4 cycles. I'm not aware of any other tracks in the NOVA area for 2 cycles. I'm low budget here so changing to a new engine is cost prohibitive at the moment. Plus, the 2-cycle reminds me of my 13B, maybe I just like the smell of pre-mix.

Thanks for the reply!!

I am actually looking for something similar, but I want to gather all of the info; before I go for it.

As far as tracks, theres summit point, VIR, and Old Town manassas raceway.

I just want to learn how to drive, and practice, practice, practice; not really interested in racing at this point.

Do you have pics of your kart?

If I jump in to the kart scene; I will start with the bare minimum. There is no point in owning the best of the best, or the fastet thing out there; if the driver can't drive

Wow...I just looked at the XR50, never heard of it before your post. That is the coolest thing I've ever seen. Little rich for my budget at the moment...maybe if I win the lottery, and I have money leftover after getting my Formula Mazda.

Woodbridge Kart Club runs alot of events out of Summit and VIR, although I think they run more Enduro karts, a Sprint Kart isn't really designed for a course that large. I don't know which courses they run at Summit tho, I've driven Shenandoah in my 2nd Gen and I bet it would be alot of fun in my kart with the right gearing.

Thats pretty much where I'm at to, I'm not entering a race until I can be reasonably competitive. Given that my kart is 10 years old, I'm concerned that I won't pass tech anyway. Not that I think the kart is dangerous, just some technicalities. Not sure if thats because of the age or because its a european chassis so was built to CIK rules rather than WKA.

I attached two pictures of my kart, let me know if you want to see anything in more detail.
