No, oddly enough they never got back to me. I've been able to get the car running and have about 300 miles on it so far. It's not perfect but I have someone stopping by this week to take a look at it to see if he can get it running better for the rest of the break-in cycle. After that, dyno tuning.

That's very strange they never got back to you, but I'm glad you got it running! What are your plans for motorsports?

Also, does anyone in the area happen to have an FC NA manual transmission laying around that I could snatch up? I would really appreciate it.

Once broken in and tuned it'll be a track day car. I ran with NASA Great Lakes back in Ohio so I plan on getting involved with NASA Mid-Atlantic and getting back into HPDEs. I don't know if I'll get into competition with it since it's not built for any particular class and probably won't ever be competitive. I might try a few auto crosses but the car really isn't set up for that.

Do you currently have one that's broken/not working? I rebuilt the N/A transmission in my FC and am pretty familiar with how they work.

Sweet! I hope to see you at some events, once my car is back up and running... so maybe in like 2020, lol.

And yes, my NA transmission is pretty well munched. I'd gladly consider rebuilding it, but I've never been able to find a manual rebuild kit for one thing. The other thing is that if/when I DO ever rebuild this manual transmission, I'd like to use Miata internals, so for now I'd rather just replace it on the cheap.

I hear you. I started my build in April 2011 and finally started the car in August 2017.

I feel like I found aftermarket bearing and synchro kits online when I contemplated replacing everything. I did the Miata gear set swap instead. It wasn't particularly difficult but it required some special tools: a puller with super-long arms to reach the length of the output shaft, a super-deep socket the length of the output shaft, and something to drive the bearings/gears back onto the shafts. Other than that I just followed the FSM. There's a ton of parts so staying organized was critical. I really like the Miata gears. 1st is now tall enough to poke around in a parking lot without having to shift into 2nd. 2nd though 4th are much closer. 5th is low enough to actually accelerate in.

Saavedro88 10-12-17 10:31 AM

Nice! Did you take apart a used Miata transmission to do it, or did you find a rebuild kit?

Saavedro88 10-12-17 08:54 PM

Also, what year Miata transmission did you use?

I used the Miata internals as-is. You have to completely disassembly both transmissions to complete the swap so I inspected parts as I went.

I think I got one from a '96, which is one of the earlier 1.8L models. It still had the double-synchro'd 2nd gear, which is an improvement over our stock N/A transmissions. If I recall correctly you can use any of the 5-speed transmissions all the way up to '04, which I think was the last year of the NB Miata. If I were to do it again I'd look for the latest year available since Mazda was constantly revising the transmissions.

Back from the dead, does anyone in richmond still have a rx7?

Saavedro88 11-20-17 06:06 AM

The dead?? The last post was like a month ago...

Yes I still have my FC

infernosg 11-20-17 06:38 AM

SA and FC owner down in Chesterfield. I rarely make it north of the river. I'm currently breaking in my FC by driving around Pocahontas State Park on a nearly daily basis.

I've still got the original trans that was in the car; it's in pieces, in a wood crate if'n you want it. The only thing wrong with it was the shift forks got bent and I believe some of the synchros were worn

from what I've seen on the Facebook, Pierce is working on getting my old black FC up and running again
and making her a little more race prepared

I sold off my 911 Targa before the move to Tampa (and back) 3 years ago (I see it often at the C&CR) and the Miata is still at my folks place up in Stuarts Draft
So if I can get the Blue Jay house sold off this summer I can build a garage at our new place

Anyone in town know how to get to the fuel injector for a FC T2?
