Pittsburgh Exhaust/Emissions Question

Alright, I have an 88' GTU, all stock. And the first mod I thought of doing was changing the exhaust (cat-back, headers...). But I heard that next year my car will be considered a classic (I think 20 years is the required time) and that I will be able to go cat-less and it will be legal to drive on the streets. Is this true for just PA or is it for the whole US? Or is even true?

I wasn't sure where to put this, so I decided that the region im in will work. If it's in the wrong spot, let me know and I will try to have it moved.

I used to live in NE PA ( Lehigh & Northampton counties) & got an exemption from emissions because i drove my GSL-SE less than 5000 miles per year.

I don't know what the local regs are but check the penndot website, it should help.

If this is your daily driver then under 5k miles is gonna be tough.

AFAIK 20+ year old cars are in the "classic" category and no longer require emissions. I believe you will get different license plates, but I could be wrong.

If he has to register it as a classic, then he's opening a can of whole new troubles. You are limited on at the amount of miles you can drive as a classic, I think it has to be stored properly, meaning car port/garage, and I believe you'll have to show proof that it's stored properly to your insurance. And I believe the only way you'll get classic plates, is by registering as a classic, which you don't have to do unless you want to.

There is alot of twists and turns to answer you ?'s

1) You can not Legally drive a car catless in Pa (Per a Best friend who is a state trooper) They technically can fight you for anything added to any car that is no OEM.. cat back exhaust even .....

2) Your car has to stay Oem to reg as a classic.(they require pics etc)

3) you can only Omit Emissions in Pa if your car did not have those emissions guidlines when built from the factory. and THATS where all the confussion comes in, because alot of "classics" (the old hot rods) didnt have the emissions that we currently have now so they are held to the same standards as when it was built. so those guys are free to do what they want basically, but "our" classic era HAD emissions therefore you still have to have emissions on the car such as a cat etc... sorry for the bad news man.....

If you have an exempt sticker 99.9% of the time police do not care... but thats an on the fence type thing.....

Hope that helps

and btw..... if your in Pittsburgh and you have a 7 why didnt you post in my Pittsburgh and Surrounding area thread man??

Car meet tonight down at the waterfront in front of the smoke stacks (11-10-07)

ok here is your best bet...the past 3 years ive been getting emissions exempt stickers the guidelines are you have to of owned the car for at least one year and you can NOT go over 5,000 miles till next inspection so if plan on driving the car for more then 5,000 then you have 2 options you can drive it like 3,000 miles or how ever many under 5,000 then dissconect your speedometer cable then hook it up for inspection next option which is what i do cause i like having my speedometer..is take the guage cluster out and take a sharp knife and crank back the odometer till its at the (safe) number of miles...it will still work after you crank it back it dosent break it

Odometers that are cranked back "Wobble" pretty noticable too....

If your gonna go through the hastles of taking the odometer off to do that, why not just buy a second one and replace it once in a while???? Less likely to get noticed......

Thats just what i heard anyway.....
