need RX-7 shop in Northern VA

I need a RX-7 repair shop in the Manassas, VA area. RP Performance and Peter Farrell have both moved out of Manassas. I have bought parts from Malloy Mazda in Woodbridge, VA. Has anyone had their FD worked on there? I have had nothing but bad previous experience with dealer shops. I need to replace my clutch release bearing and do not feel like lying on a creeper to do it. Local redneck repair shops will have to learn how to fix a FD on my dime- not a good idea. Any references will be appreciated.

Yes, they moved to Frederick, Md several years ago. It's not far from northern Va at all. I just drove there and back today, and I live in Alexandria. It's only like 45min-1 hour each way.

Bring it to Malloy and talk to Ray... He's got several FDs, one of which is a 20B.

A clutch bearing isn't really anything rotary specific. I would imagine any good mechanic should be able to handle it.

clutch repair

True- but you can not believe some of the bone-headed mistakes that I have endured from Mazda dealer "mechanics", so I'm not too confident going to just anyone. The wedge collar and the release bearing must be separated by reaching thru one of the inspection holes on the bell housing in order to remove the transmission and bell housing, otherwise the mechanic will be pulling on the thing all day and it will not come off. Also, the wedge collar and retaining wire ring can not be re-used. Not sure if a regular mechanic would know that.

This may be the catalyst to my installing a lift in my garage. I hate having someone do work on the car that I know how to do (but am now too old and lazy to do if I have to lie on a creeper).

I've been recommended Kyle at CK Auto Works out in Manassas by a forum member. I've exchanged voice mails with him and that's about it but he supposedly does good work and is fair. He works out of Meador Automotive, 8395-G Euclid Ave, Manassas Park, VA 20111. His phone number is 571-233-6746.

I think you can search and find more info on this site. Good luck!

Kyle's no longer working there, unfortunately he's moved on to greener pastures.

Yes, I suspect it depends what it is. He's done my tranny/diff installs, some fab work, some maintenance stuff. I don't know if he'd take on a junky "project" car (not suggesting thats what you have), but he does service some RX7's.

He's also not cheap, but they do good work.

I can see Mitch doing that kind of work, plus engine swaps. I was thinking more in terms of rebuilding engine, etc.

Funny you mentioned junky projects, as I think thats how others saw my project while the car sat "there"

And yes, Mitch does GREAT fab work. One of the best, if not the best around here.

Those pastures haven't quite been green enough Rocky, so I'm reconsidering things and working on new potential plans. Feel free to get in touch with me if you would like, otherwise I'll keep posted.

I would also go with Ray Crowe, I ordered a wiring harness for my 93 FD from him. Not really sure much about him, but the shop I got to in Central PA said he is a great guy.
