Get Garmin, will explain later when I have more time. I have 2 Gps units and tested a few more. I like the Garmin C340 or the new Nuvi which has dropped in price.

I use Street Atlas.

It runs on my Computer or PDA. I use the Computer mostly in the Rodeo, but on long trips without my computer or for easy switching between RX7s I use the PDA.

Software ~$120

I was planning on running this in a rally im attending later this year. how quick does the software update. can you enter a destination and does it give you a route? can you modify that route?

how do you have to mount the gps unit that attaches to your laptop, the small usb device iirc?

If you mean how fast does it respond to car movement, you never notice any lag on the computer or the PDA.

You can route, track, or change destinations on the fly with the computer version.

However, on the PDA, you import a route FROM the computer so changing the route destination is not possible without the computer. Even if you don't have a route loaded on the PDA, it will still track and show where you are on the map at any time.

The Antenna mounts to the windsheild using suction cups and it connected to the Laptop via a 6' USB cable.

For the PDA, I use a wireless Bluetooth transciever to connect the antenna.

I've used a TomTom and a Mio, both were excellent. Route changing on the fly, auto route recalculation if you end up of course.

Get a standalone, don't run it on a PDA or laptop.

Reasons I prefer a NOT to get a stand alone...
  • One more thing in the car to easily steal
  • I already carry either my laptop or my PDA with me most places
  • PDA slips into my pocket
  • PC Based software offers many more options including customizable maps and way points
  • I can use the same PDA for auto, Boat, Plane, walking, biking, or running
  • dont need to find a auto power supply to plug into
  • I can load streets, terrain maps for x-country walking or biking and get details on streams, creeks, cabins, etc.
  • Laptop/PDA software only costs ~$100

Granted the laptop software is cheaper, but almost all of the other points are mute. You can easily remove the gps unit and throw it in the glove box or if you get one of the garmin Nuvis they fit right in your pocket as well. Garmin has lots of map downloads and some models have waypoints, you can also store hundreds of addresses not to mention the points of interest preloaded on it. You can take the nuvis on a boat, plane, or walking.
