Need Help

I need advice on what to do with my car.

I live in philadelphia, PA and have been driving a 1994 RX-7 on the original engine until last week at 92000 miles. Finally, it blew and the compression reads at 5.2. I need to get a new engine if I want the car to move again. The question is should I get it fixed?, how much would it cost?, and where? I have been trying to contact KDR performance and advanced rotary performance but still haven`t been able to contact them. I had some work done at KDR before and I was pleased.

Also, if I do not decide to repair my car, is my RX-7 just a piece of junk or can someone salvage the parts?

If anyone can give me some advice on what I should do, please e-mail me at takopon@aol.com. I would appreciate any help!

Thank you,

Takopon

KDR is extremely busy. Getting it touch can be difficult.

The cheapest solution without risking reliability is to drop in a Mazda reman. The reman motor is $3500, and installation is $1000 or so of labor. I recommend that if you go this route get the reman from Malloy Mazda and have it installed by a rotary shop, NOT THE LOCAL DEALER.

Cheaper still is a used engine, which can be an outstanding value if the condition is good, or a complete loss if there is a problem with it. You definitely want to see the used motor run before buying it if at all possible.

The other option is to have an engine builder take apart your engine and rebuild it, replacing what parts are no good. Cost varies substantially depending on the nature of the damage, level of tolerances held (like-new tolerances will help ensure the reman lasts a long time), and upgrades that are done. Plus things like vacuum hoses, FPD, injector cleaning, OMP lines, emissions engine wiring harness, etc slowly go bad and each should carefully evaluated before being re-used. In other words, you should absolutely replace them since they don't come with a reman motor.

The car is not junk - it's simply worth $5000 less than with a good engine. I don't recommend parting it out since it's a loss to see a perfectly usable car go. But parting out could easily raise $5000 if the condition of the parts is good, and you don't mind spending months packaging parts and shipping them. I suggest you get it rebuilt and keep it, or rebuilt and sell it. You can also sell it as-is - more experienced rotary owners might prefer this since they have their hands in the rebuild - but there are fewer buyers in this category.

I suggest you head to the 3rd gen specific forum and read teh FAQ there. It shoudl provide you a lot of useful information.

Point of fact to not have a dealer do your remain. The Previous owner of my car had a mazda reman installed and it blew. After I took the car I found that the dealership had neglected to reconnect the wastegate actuator.

I would recommend Kevin Landers at rotary resurrection. I've had 3 motors built by him and all 3 have been strong engines. (Two turbo motors, and one N/a) He did all the installation work on all 3 and I was very happy with his work and his attention to all my questions and concerns after the work was done. He provides a great warranty as well. The only problem is that he is in TN. I live about an hour south of philly and I made the 8 hour trip with a blown engine twice and towed the other car.
